A dog?s tail is a very necessary appendage as it is used by man?s best friends to communicate, used for comfort and even in the trivial function of swatting flies and other insect that pesters the dog. Centuries ago, it was a custom in Great Britain to dock the tails of dogs. Farmers and drovers would usually cut and shorten the tail of dog to avoid paying taxes for keeping these animals. Although the custom was stopped in 1796, dog owners continued to shorten the tails of their pets. To follow the requirements of the breed standard some dogs are purposely docked. This breed from the land down under is the result of careful breeding. This breed is believed to be oldest breed of Australian working dog. An Australian Stumpy Tailed Dog was developed from the mating of a Dingo and a short tailed dog. To maintain the short-tailed characteristics, long tailed dogs were eliminated from the breeding program and only short tailed dogs were mated.
