Pentax K-01

The Pentax K-01 ($899.95 direct with 40mm lens) is a bit of a departure in concept when compared with other compact interchangeable lens cameras. Rather than design a new lens mount, Pentax opted to use the same bayonet K mount that it has used since 1975. Because of this, the K-01 is closer in size to a D-SLR than other mirrorless compacts. In terms of size, it's the complete opposite of Pentax's first foray into the category, the very small Pentax Q ($799.95, 3 stars), a cute camera that packed a sensor identical in size to those found in most point-and-shoots. The K-01 uses a 16-megapixel APS-C sensor, the same size as the one found in the company's D-SLRs and our Editors' Choice for this category, the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 ($649.99, 4.5 stars).

Design and Features
Pentax enlisted renowned designer Mark Newson to sketch out the K-01 and the results are interesting. The body is constructed of metal, but features a rubberized grip, which is available in Newson's signature bright yellow.?The camera has a very boxy feel, but the buttons and dials are all in the right places.?

The camera measures 3.1 by 4.8 by 2.3 inches (HWD) and weighs 19.8 ounces, not that much smaller than the entry-level Pentax K-r ($699.95, 3 stars) D-SLR, which is 3.8 by 4.9 by 2.7 inches in size and just 21 ounces. Because the K-01 has a native D-SLR lens mount, the distance between the lens and the image sensor must be equal to that of a camera with a mirror?making the distance shorter would prevent lenses from being able to focus properly. Pentax includes the new DA 40mm f/2.8 XS lens (60mm equivalent), a slimmer, less-expensive version of the highly regarded DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited lens ($499.95). The XS lens, which is also designed by Newson, barely protrudes from the body, giving it the feel of being part of the camera rather than being attached to it. If you already have the DA 40mm lens, which is also quite slim, consider getting the K-01 as a body only for $749.95, and if you're a Pentax user that is interested in the slimline XS version of the 40mm more than the K-01, you'll be happy to know that it is available separately for only $249.95.

The other side of Pentax's decision to include the pancake prime as the standard kit lens for the K-01 is one of practicality?a 40mm lens doesn't give you any sort of zoom, and it isn't suitable for wide angle scenes. Most mirrorless cameras, including the very compact Olympus PEN E-PM1 ($499.99, 4 stars), ship with a 3x zoom lens that covers about a 28-85mm field of view. If you already own a Pentax D-SLR, you'll be able to mount your existing 18-55mm (27.5-82.5mm equivalent) zoom lens to the K-01, but the perfect second lens for the camera may be the wide-angle DA 21mm f/3.2 AL Limited ($649.95 direct), which produces a classic 30mm wide-angle perspective on APS-C cameras.

The K-01 doesn't have a built-in electronic viewfinder, nor does it have the option to add one as you can with the Sony Alpha NEX-5N ($699.99, 4.5 stars). This is complicated by the fixed rear LCD. The 920k-dot display is very bright and crisp, and when you activate the Focus Peaking feature it makes it easy to verify focus and use legacy manual focus glass with the camera, but it doesn't tilt. Unless you're working with a tripod, this leaves you with a camera that you are almost required to hold like a point-and-shoot?with your arms extended far enough away from your face for you to properly frame an image. You can shoot with cameras that feature articulating rear screens, like the Olympus PEN E-PL3 ($699.99, 3.5 stars), from the hip as you would with a classic medium format camera with a waist-level finder.?If you're in love with the K-01, but really need an eye-level finder, consider tracking down a dedicated 60mm optical viewfinder and slide it into the camera's hot shoe. You'll have to trust the camera's autofocus and the framing will be a bit rough, but it should make it a bit more practical for quick street shots.

The larger body paves the way for a solid layout of controls. There's a standard mode dial, control wheel, and shutter release up top, along with EV Compensation, programmable green and red buttons, and the flash release, which doubles as the Delete button when reviewing shots. On the rear panel you'll find dedicated buttons to adjust ISO, Flash output, the Self Timer, and White Balance. There's also a button for Autofocus/Auto Exposure Lock, and the standard Info, Menu, Play, and OK buttons.

US women seek football revenge against Japan

By ERIC TALMADGE

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:50 p.m. ET March 31, 2012

SENDAI, Japan (AP) -It was one of those games - one of those really big games - that just doesn't sit right for U.S. women's football coach Pia Sundhage.

As far as she is concerned, her team played better than Japan in last year's World Cup final. She still thinks they should have won.

Now, she is looking ahead to the Olympics. And again, Japan is on her mind.

"We have something to prove every time we play Japan," Sundhage said Saturday ahead of a matchup between the two rivals at the Kirin Challenge Cup on Japan's home turf.

The exhibition tournament features three of the top four-ranked teams in the world. The U.S. national team is ranked No. 1 just ahead of Germany, while Japan is No. 3. The other team competing for the title, Brazil, is No. 4.

The U.S. women's squad, which plays Japan on Sunday, goes into the match the favorite. They have a solid record against the Japanese - 22-1-4 - but have lost some big ones lately.

In the victory that made them national heroes, the Japanese team came from behind twice and held on to better the U.S. women in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw to win the World Cup final in Germany last summer. It was the team's first win over the United States, and came as the country was still coming to grips with the devastating earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the northern coastline of Japan in March last year.

"In the World Cup, I think we played better than Japan," Sundhage said. "I think we were a little bit unlucky."

But in their most recent game, the Japanese also won 1-0 on March 5 to advance to the final of the Algarve Cup in Portugal. The U.S. had to settle for third place, but went out strongly with a 4-0 win over Sweden. Japan lost the final to Germany.

Both teams are now looking ahead to the Olympics, which start in July in London.

"We are ready and well," Sundhage said. "I don't think we are as well connected as we will be for the Olympics. We are building up for that."

Japan's coach, Norio Sasaki, said his team is at it peak, although it will be playing without star midfielder Homare Sawa, the FIFA women's world player of the year.

"This is a really important chance for us to beat the United States and Brazil ahead of the Olympics," he said. "They are both great teams."

Sundhage said her team will be focused on playing an aggressive game and will try to keep possession of the ball so that they do not have to defend as much against the Japanese, who are a highly skilled, technical squad.

"One thing is absolutely clear - they have always been a technical team, and they are a more physical team today," she said.

After Sunday's opener, the U.S. plays Brazil on Tuesday. The final game, Brazil vs. Japan, is on Thursday.

Southern Bourbon Mountains: Ford's 1st Birthday Party! (What DID ...

Family post party

This post is a Two Part Series. Why? Because Friday night and Saturday morning of the party were filled with Urgent Care visits and lots of medication. This first part will tell you what did happen. Part two will cover what didn't happen (on my OCD list)
The bottom line (before you think I'm an over-the-top-mom) is that I love entertaining. While I'm not the chef in the family, I love getting the house ready, making a party playlist, setting up a slideshow, picking out invites, arranging flowers....etc. I made a promise to M that I will not do this for every birthday...I mean, won't we be at Monkey Joe's in a few years anyways? But a good old fashioned house party is my absolute favorite. We work hard on our homes and yards so why not celebrate that hard work with having friends over?

I picked a Cowboy theme for Ford's 1st birthday because it was cute, had plenty of decor ideas, and the invites I found on Etsy were so freaking adorable. Plus we could serve BBQ and beer and it would be a fun party!

So here we go!

LOVE these invites. Mine was a little different saying Bandanas & BBQ for Ford's 1st Birthday

A dear friend told me about this amazing cake lady here in Charlotte. Her phone number will cost you $20...just kidding. You will have to bribe me for it with more than that!

How cute are my sauce labels? NOT. I wanted to have a little NC map with a heart over Western NC for Tomato sauce and a heart over Easter NC for Vinegar sauce. That didn't happen and the sauces never made it into the bottles! But Dad did bring sauce from 12 Bones in Asheville and it was killer.

Dad toasting my hard work with a bloody mary.?

Here are the kiddos gift bags. I found the bags at the Dollar Store. I can't say enough about the Dollar Store! Having a party that includes a primary color as part of the decor helps too. Inside was a rubber ducky dressed as a cowboy and some silly sunglasses. Probably my craftiest endeavor was the labels. I wanted to order them off Etsy but instead I bought a stamp from Paper Source and downloaded a font. Impressed right? Using my old Rockbrook skills!

The spread. BBQ, Coleslaw (Bojangles!) Chips, Goldfish and Buddy Fruit squeeze snacks

Dr. Seuss's Happy Birthday Book for guests to sign and cookies as the take home!

How cute is Ford's smash cake?!

Our buddy Wallace looking mighty guilty! Beer & Juice boxes in the Radio Flyer!

Not so much a smash cake as a timidly poke cake. He loved it!

My sweet one year old

And there's me! Dollar store cups, napkins and straws from Sur la Table. How cute are Ford's friends?

I think the party went well! M's BBQ was perfection and I think all the kids had a good time!

A huge thank you to all my friends and family that came out for Ford's first birthday. A party is just a bunch of decorations until all your friends show up! You all are such wonderful friends and I feel like the luckiest mom in the world that Ford is surrounded by such amazing friends and family!!!

PSA: TurboTax on Android is free through Sunday if you start your taxes before then

If you've ever filed your taxes on an iPad, you know Intuit's TurboTax app is free to download, but that you'll have to pay up once you're ready to submit those returns. But, in an effort to promote its newish apps for Android tablets and the Kindle Fire, the company's giving the entire number-crunching cow away for free -- at least through this weekend. Just download between tomorrow (Friday) and Sunday and make sure you start your taxes before Monday (it's okay if you finish them later). To be clear, this includes both federal and state-level taxes, which you'd normally pay for separately for $29.99 and up. Another quid pro quo: this won't work on handsets, even though the Kindle runs a customized version of Android 2.3. If you own a tablet it should run smoothly on Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich, though. In any case, to those of you who've been putting off your taxes, happy downloading, procrastinators.

Edgar Alvarez contributed to this report.

=?UTF-8?B - Internet Marketing Newsletters

This is a story about country culture and corporate culture?

Yesterday
I returned from a 9-day, four-city speaking tour of in Australia
(Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Perth) and I?m absolutely EXHAUSTED!

Before I get into the ?culture?, here are some pictures and a few highlights from the trip?

After
a 15-hour flight, the adventure begins with a visit to Steve Irwin?s
(the Crocodile Hunter) ?Australia Zoo? near Brisbane ? and my first
encounter with a cuddly-koala bear!

BTW ? Koalas smell weird and have sharp, pointy claws!

The
four-day, four-city speaking gig in the ?land down under? was a ton of
fun ? I met
[url]
Traffic Geyser ,
[url]
Instant Customer ,
[url]
Main Street Marketers ,
[url]
Cross-Channel MOJO and
[url]
Make, Market, LAUNCH IT! customers in every city.

Here are just a FEW of the OZZIE customers and fans I met up with:

But as fun as the tripmay appear,
it was grueling ? after I landed in Australia, I had one day to recover
(more on this in a moment) ? and then for the next four days it was
wake up, spend 6-7 hours tweaking my ?platform? presentation, speak on
stage in front of 250-500 people, answer questions, take a couple
pictures, pack my bags, hop on a plane to the next city, take a cab to
the next hotel, grab a late meal, go to sleep and then repeat. 16-hour
days in front of people?then eating yummy hotel food. :(

When it was over, I had half a day to rest at the hotel and jump on a plane back to the US.

No
time to stick around for a couple extra days and enjoy. I had to get
back home ? we?ve been BUSY working on the update of Instant Customer,
version 1.5 launched this past week ? and we?re planning for two
back-to-back live events,
[url]
Make Market Launch and the
[url]
Cross-Channel MOJO Event , not to mention the upcoming release of
[url]
Instant Customer to the public?

?back to OZ / Down Under / Australia? ;)

I
could EASILY move to Australia in a heartbeat ? OZZIES are an amazing
and interesting bunch of folks. This was my fifth trip in seven years to
Australia and I?m always super impressed with OZ culture.

Here?s why?

Australia
is expensive ? much more so than the US. Taxes are higher. On average, I
think people make less money per capita. Regulations are much more
restrictive than here. If you think it?s hard to do business in the US,
it?s WORSE there. Sure, there are more social services ? but you pay for
it.

But
Ozzies are a resilient bunch. They figure stuff out. They adapt.
They?re not as cynical as Americans. And in my opinion, they?re more
committed to personal development, making a better life for themselves
and more HOPEFUL than we are.

That?s the word that keeps coming up for me. Hopeful. But they take action ? and risks willingly.

They?re
so darn CIVILIZED! Unlike dealing with American business culture ? I
find the Ozzies say what they mean, mean what they say, do what they say
and there isn?t some hidden agenda or doublespeak going on. It?s weird,
but when you?re there, you get it right away?they?re more trusting
too.

But back to the adventure ? and corporate culture?

Here?s a picture of our group at Steven Irwin?s (the Crocodile Hunter) Australia Zoo.

In
this picture are Steve Irwin?s widow, Terri and her kids Bindi (13) and
Robert (8) along with their team of incredible people at the zoo who?ve
created a culture unlike anything I?ve ever seen.

My
friend Sean Roach brought,
[url]
Lisa Sasavich ,
John Assaraf and me to the ?Australia Zoo? for an all-day tour.

I was blown away with what I witnessed there.

The
?zoo? is Australia?s version of ?Zappos? ? the most incredible
corporate culture I?ve ever seen. To call this place a ?zoo? is an
injustice to the place. I find zoos offensive and filled with sad
creatures. This a remarkable haven and hospital for animals and in the
Irwin family?s own words, the animals come first, the staff comes second
and the visitors third.

But not for one second do you feel that way?

The
animals are fed the highest-quality foods, treated with respect and the
Irwin family are ambassadors and advocates for a level of animal
respect I haven?t seen before. The two kids, Bindi and Robert are so
incredibly smart, mature and conscious ? it was breathtaking.

The
workers at the zoo clearly love what they do ? some of them came from
Disney and big entertainment and hospitality jobs, leaving behind more
money and opportunity to work for a company with vision and leadership
that?s new, fresh, young and very, very unique.

Walking
away, I was both inspired and had aspirations to bring the same culture
and leadership back to our company here (without the animals, of course
:) .

So
here?s my quick takeaway for you ? if you have an opportunity to get to
Australia, find a way to get to the ?zoo? and pay attention to the
detail and care that?s given to the animals, people and customers.

I promise, you?ll feel and be inspired to find a way to integrate it in your life and business too.

Here, kitty, kitty, kitty! Feeding a baby cheetah frozen sardines on a stick. PU, STINKY!

What is Mike reading this week?

POP!: Create the Perfect Pitch, Title, and Tagline for Anything

[url]

Want to grab someone?s attention and make them remember you and your products?

Then you need
[url]
POP !

This book is a perfect companion to ?
[url]
Pitch Anything ? from my friend, Oren Klaff.

The
?cornerstone? of the book revolves around answering the ?9 Ws? (or W9
as the book calls it) for your message/product/service:

1. What am I offering?
2. What problem does my idea or offering solve?
3. Why is it worth trying and buying?
4. Who is my target audience?
5. Who am I and what are my credentials?
6. Who are my competitors and how am I different from them?
7. What resistance or objections will people have to this?
8. What is the purpose of my pitch?
9. When, where, and how do I want people to take action?
Yea,
sounds simple enough. But Sam Horn guides you step-by-step through the
process with significant assistance and guidance for each question in
the book.

The bottom line?

[url]
POP !
Stand Out In Any Crowd,, is a practical guide to communicating your
ideas and messages in a way that they?ll ?stand out from the crowd? and
be easily remembered. At its core, the book is about branding and
communication.

What
I like about it is it?s filled with practical walkthroughs and examples
of 20 or so branding and communications techniques. You?re shown how to
use them on your own ideas, products, and services right away.

It?s
a quick read ? and if you want to get through it even faster, make sure
you download and watch my ?how to speed read? mini-course at

You retain more ? and get through the book in 30-60 minutes!

Gadget of the Week:

Kindle Fire

[url]
Full Color 7? Multi-touch Display, Wi-Fi

I LOVE my Kindle Fire!

No, it?s not an iPad 3 or iPad Plus or whatever Apple calls the new one ;)

But it costs $200 ? not the $499 ? $839 that you have to spend on an iPad.

It?s not as good as an iPad, it only runs wifi, the battery life isn?t as long, the onscreen keyboard is klunky, but here?s what I LOVE about it?

The price.

I like the size better than an iPad. It?s not as big. It fits in your hand better. And it syncs with all of your
[url]
Kindle books, magazines, apps, the Amazon Prime library and more.

It has a decent NetFlix app. And it runs a variant of the Android operating system so there?s a gazillion apps available for free.

Amazon has done a pretty good job of making sure the apps that show up isn?t a bunch of junk.

If you can?t afford an iPad or justify the expense, the Kindle fire is an OUTSTANDING piece of tech for the money ? very usable.

For the most part, I don?t buy physical books anymore.
[url]
Kindle won the ebook reader wars ? and now reading on a device is a better experience than a book, magazine or newspaper in my opinion.

Not to mention the fact that you can watch movies, listen to music, read newspapers and much more?

[url]

App Pick of the Week -Scrivener ? Write books, screenplays, make Kindle Books, ePub (for iPad) and MUCH MORE!

I?ve been writing my new book, ?21 Ways to Get Instant Customers in Just 10 Minutes Per Day? and have found the ULTIMATE tool for writing books, screenplays or any kind of copy.

It?s called
[url]
Scrivener .

I learned about it from Tim Ferriss ? it?s what he uses to write his books. And by gum, if it?s good enough for Tim, it?s good enough for me.

If you?ve ever wanted to write a book, novel, article or anything but feel horribly constrained by the absolutely rotten word processors, outlining programs and writing systems that are out there (you?d think after 20 years, Microsoft Word would actually be usable and bug free), I?ve found what I consider to be the utopia of writing tools.

What I absolutely LOVE about
[url]
Scrivener is it exports ebooks in
[url]
Kindle , ePub formats (for iPad), PDF, Microsoft Word or practically any other format you?ll ever need or want.

It has tons of great organization tools and places to put all of your content. For brainstorming, it?s fantastic.

Originally only for the Mac, it?s now available for Windows and there?s a free demo you can download and try out.

Check out the application
[url]
here ? and watch the video tutorials. It?s absolutely brilliant.

[url]

And for a fantastic demonstration (better than I could have made for you), watch
[url]
this excellent tutorial by
[url]
Dan McAlister from ScreencastsOnline .

I give it a FIVE STAR, THREE SCOOPS OF YUMMY AWESOME AWARD.

$7 million spaceport runway extension OK'd

The nearly two-mile-long runway at Spaceport America in southern New Mexico will have to be extended to accommodate Virgin Galactic's sleek rocket-powered spacecraft, spaceport officials confirmed Thursday.

New Mexico Spaceport Authority board members voted during a regular meeting Wednesday to extend the runway by another 2,000 feet. Spaceport America is the world's first terminal, hangar and runway built specifically for commercial space travel.

Virgin Galactic, which will be the spaceport's anchor tenant, determined through a battery of test flights and simulations that more room would be needed for landings under certain circumstances.

"It's really being done for safety," spaceport spokesman David Wilson said. "It was a guess until they started dropping it and simulating and doing different scenarios, how this thing was going to behave on the runway. This is all a product of the testing and the characteristics of the vehicle."

Backed by British billionaire Richard Branson, the commercial space line has been developing its craft and rocket engines in California's Mojave Desert. The company plans to begin moving into the hangar and terminal facility later this year, and the runway extension is not expected to cause delays.

The runway was dedicated by Branson and other officials in October 2010 with much fanfare.

Stretching across a flat dusty plain 45 miles north of Las Cruces, the runway is designed to support almost every aircraft in the world, day-to-day space tourism flights and payload launch operations. It is 42 inches thick and includes a 14-inch layer of concrete.

Money to be reassigned
The extension will cost $7 million, Wilson said. Money will be reassigned within the spaceport's $209 million taxpayer-financed budget to absorb the cost of the change.

Designing the extension will take six to eight months.

Virgin Galactic has said rocket testing is continuing and commercial flights are at least a year away.

Wilson said the extension did not come as a surprise to spaceport board members. As part of the agreement Virgin Galactic had with New Mexico to build the spaceport, any technical changes that resulted from development of the spaceship technology would have to be accommodated by the state.

One scenario considered was if the rocket ship's engines did not fire. That would require the craft to glide back to the spaceport, loaded with unburned fuel. That would mean the craft would be heavier and would require more room to land.

Other factors involve New Mexico's altitude and high temperatures, which make the air thinner.

"That dictates longer runways," Wilson said.

Branson and Virgin Galactic officials have said repeatedly that everything possible will be done to ensure safety once commercial flights begin.

Commercial considerations
Unlike experimental programs run by NASA, Wilson said Spaceport America and Virgin Galactic are based on business models and investments.

"Obviously safety has to be at the highest level, especially when you're talking about commercial passenger service," he said.

Branson announced last week that Virgin Galactic had netted its 500th customer, actor Ashton Kutcher. Others include Hollywood types, international entrepreneurs, scientists and space buffs.

At $200,000 a ticket, the space tourists get a 2 1/2-hour flight with about five minutes of weightlessness and views of Earth that until now only astronauts have been able to experience.

Savage Love: Same Sex, Different Age Relationships - Washington ...

I am the father of a recently out 18-year-old gay boy. Here?s the problem: My son is in a relationship with a 31-year-old guy. I?m not okay with that. Yes, my son is a legal adult at 18 and can make his own decisions, but he?s also still in high school. His mother argues that in order to be supportive, we can?t object to this relationship. I don?t think this is a gay versus straight objection. If I had an 18-year-old heterosexual daughter who was in a relationship with a 31-year-old man, I would have exactly the same concerns and objections. Beyond that, even if I can establish that it?s OK to have an objection, or to feel the need to take some action to be supportive for my son, I don?t know what I can or should do. What say you, oh wise one? ?One Concerned Dad

Your wife is wrong.

Homophobic parents are bad for gay kids. But ?supportive? parents who let their gay kids get away with murder?supportive parents who stop parenting their gay kids because they worry about seeming homophobic if they object to lousy gay boyfriends, choices, apparel, etc.?aren?t doing their gay kids any favors, either. Your son, despite what he might tell you, needs his parents to advise him, meddle in his affairs, even object and interfere.

Here?s what I would do if I were in your shoes, OCD?I would take my son?s 31-year-old boyfriend out for a beer and ask him a lot of pointed questions: How did you meet my son? Are you having sex with my son? Are you using condoms? What is your HIV status? How old was your last boyfriend? And, finally, do you realize that I will tear you gay limb from gay limb if you hurt my gay kid?

As for your son, OCD, tell him that you realize gay guys his age sometimes date older men because there aren?t a lot of boys his own age to choose from. (If you didn?t already know that, now you do.) And tell your son that this gay dude you know?that would be me, OCD?told you that something?s usually wrong when a 31-year-old is dating a teenager. Something?s usually wrong with the 31-year-old. There are exceptions, of course, and maybe his boyfriend is exceptional?maybe he?s not a jerk who pursues naive boys because gay men his own age can see through his shit?but the simple fact of his age requires that he be subjected to a higher degree of scrutiny than a first boyfriend who was closer to your son?s own age.

Finally, OCD, tell your son that you know he?s an adult and free to date whomever he wants. But you?re his dad and he has to hear you out?whether he wants to or not. ?Dan

I?m 16 and an openly gay boy in a very welcoming community. My first boyfriend and I broke up recently. We?ll be friends again, I?m sure, but now I don?t even have a hint of any sort of anything on the horizon, and it?s driving me insane. All the out gay guys here are nice, but most are sassy stereotypical caricature flamer types and I?m not attracted to any of them. But those are the kind of people who are out at 16. I just hate thinking I?m alone for the foreseeable future. I know the logical thing is for me to wait, but how am I supposed to wait? Is there any alternative? ?Whiny Angsty Sad Teen Entreats Dan

Sorry, WASTED, but you?re gonna get the same advice I give to hard and hard-up 16-year-old straight boys: Worry less about getting your 16-year-old self laid and more about getting your 20-year-old self laid. Get out of the house and do shit, get books and read shit, volunteer for a political organization and change shit. You?ll have more boys to choose from in a few years and you?ll be a more interesting, more informed, more attractive guy thanks to all that doing, reading, and volunteering. Beat off in the interim, WASTED, remembering to vary your masturbatory routine (left hand, right hand; firm grip, soft touch; with toys, without; lots of lube, just a drop; etc.), and try to cultivate your own erotic imagination (translation: Don?t jerk off to internet porn exclusively; use your imagination once in a while).

I?m not telling you that you should wait until you?re 20 to date. But you?ll find the next few years less aggravating if you take the long view and keep busy, all the while jerking it to your part?s content. And who knows? You might meet a nice boy while you?re out there doing shit.

As for those ?sassy stereotypical caricature flamer types,? WASTED?

SSCFTs can be attractive, and some guys are into SSCFTs. But some boys react to the pressures of being young, gay, and out by dialing it up to 20. It?s a force field?it?s a fierce field?that many SSCFTs eventually drop. Which is to say: You may have already met your next boyfriend, WASTED, but his fierce field was up. You might want to give ?em a little time. ?Dan

My 13-year-old nephew, who is straight, was in a play last year. It was a very positive experience. The only problem is one of the theater group?s fans, who is 50 and gay, befriended my sister and seems to be fixated on my nephew: He posts to my nephew?s Facebook page, he?s constantly asking my sister to allow my nephew to spend the night at his apartment, etc. I would like you to weigh in on this situation, Dan. Other family members share my suspicions, but we?re afraid to say anything to my sister because she has a temper. Should I go ahead and tell my sister and brother-in-law that I think the guy is attracted to my nephew? ?A Worried Aunt

Thanksgiving, 2019: ?I?m so sorry you got raped when you were 13. I thought something was off about that guy. But I didn?t say anything at the time because I was afraid your mom would yell at me. So, um, pass the yams??

Unless you?re looking forward to making an apology like that after your nephew confronts his whole family for failing to protect him when he was a child, AWA, you should speak the fuck up. Talk to your sister, temper be damned, and talk to your nephew, too. Your sister could be colorblind in addition to being an angerbomb?prone to rages and incapable of seeing red flags?and it?s possible that your nephew already told his mother that this man makes him uncomfortable and got yelled at himself.

Firmly raise your concerns, AWA, but don?t make accusations. You may not have all the information. It?s possible that this man has no sexual interest in your nephew. It?s also possible that your nephew is gay, recently came out to his mother and father but wasn?t ready to come out to his extended family, and this man is mentoring your nephew at your sister?s request. But even so, fiftysomething gay men do not invite 13-year-old boys to sleepovers for the same reason fiftysomething straight men don?t invite 13-year-old girls to sleepovers: Suspicions will be aroused, even if nothing else is. In my opinion, the invite itself is a mentor-disqualifying display of piss-poor judgment.

Speak up, AWA. ?Dan Savage

Physical Fitness Can Help Diabetics | TopNews United States

With initial studies and theories suggesting diabetes patients to take extra care of their health, researchers have recently started urging the Type 2 diabetes patients to regularly follow weight loss programs and other physical fitness routines enabling them to be lessening the risks of losing mobility and their activeness.

The findings have come from the `Look Ahead' trial (Action for Health in Diabetes)', which was conducted over a period of four years. The results of the trial have been concluded only after studying approx 5,145 participants and their lifestyles, from which the researchers concluded that participating in weight loss and physical fitness programs are healthier for overweight or obese patients suffering from type 2 diabetes as it almost halves their risk of losing mobility.

Moreover, intentional weight loss regime also lessens the risks of developing any cardiovascular disease in the obese Type 2 diabetic patients.

To thoroughly study the effects of physical fitness in the diabetic patients, the researchers divided the participants into two groups, one, intensive lifestyle intervention group and other was diabetes support and education group.

The former group was made to attend meetings in which they studied maintaining weight loss through caloric intake cut, whereas the latter one was made to attend three meetings each year, which taught them generally regarding diet charts, activities, and social support.

Researchers noticed participant's mobility and disability to perform any activity and found after four years of following the similar pattern that ILI group showed 48% lesser disability in their mobility-related activities as compared to the other group.

"These findings add support to making lifestyle changes that improve health and reduce disability in people with type 2 diabetes, changes that already have been shown to prevent the disease and provide a good return on investment", Griffin P. Rodgers, the study leader from NIH's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), said.

Foxconn To Invest $1.6B In Sharp For Flat Panels, Maybe For The iPad? Maybe For Apple TV?

foxconnstoresApple has yet to make any statements about where and when we might ever see an Apple TV product to match the impact it has had in the smartphone and tablet markets. But news of an investment by its key manufacturing partner, Foxconn, could point to the confidence others have of what might be coming soon. Foxconn is investing a combined 133 billion yen ($1.6 billion) in TV maker Sharp Corporation and a flat-panel JV it has with Sony -- and it has added a commitment to buy up to 50 percent of all of Sharp's LCD panel output. The deal is the largest-ever by a Taiwanese manufacturer in a Japanese supplier and could be all the more bold, considering that just yesterday there was a report from iSuppli on how sales of flat-panel TVs were in decline and flattening out.

$ 11000000000 Market for Self-Improvement missing direction ...

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) 26 March 2012

There is no shortage of demand for products and programs that Americans want more money to do justice to lose weight, improve your relationships and business skills to deal with stress, or get a quick dose of motivation. A handful of elite celebrities have used their names for multi-media empires to construct consisting of books, tapes, CDs / DVDs, seminars, workshops, websites and online universities, coaching staff, infomercials, and consulting.

According to Research Director, John LaRosa: It seems that small businesses and entrepreneurs to do better in this market of large enterprises. We expect them to fill gaps in the market. Poor performance of companies like Nightingale-Conant, and more recently, to own, show that many consumers still do not understand self-improvement, or not to adopt new technologies.

Key findings:

Market Value

The U.S. market

self-improvement was worth about U.S. $ 11170000000 in the last year. We expect a 5.5% average annual gains of 2010 to 2014. The recession took a toll on most market segments. (See attached table for the segment of the market values ??$ )

Market remains without leadership

Troubled

fizzles own channel

Analysts expected the end of 2010

Market Data Oprah Winfrey?s new OWN network, launched in January 2011, to become the leading television stations self-improvement. That has not happened. Discovery Communications, the new channels financier, invested $ 312 million on a new channel with the public mismanagement and several shake-ups filled. The industry still has a professional association or a magazine.

Instead of compelling new programming language to increase the ratings would have, Oprah has enjoyed long-standing partners, as Dr. Phil, Suze Orman, Dr. Oz, and Rosie O?Donnell (whose show was canceled). The shows are repeated several times daily. This is not in resonance with the audience, waiting for other gurus of self-improvement, suspends, and interviews were documentariesnot to see only Oprah. As a result, other entrepreneurs have quietly plans and resources to prepare their own TV channel to create self-improvement.

Meltdown Producer Public seminar

Service

in live events and training low ($ 400-500000000 market) took a big hit, due to increased travel costs. Webinars have the void filled more and more popular due to lower cost and availability 24/7. In addition, mega-producer workshops, seminars Get motivated, is in crisis, beset by a nasty divorce between the founders, Peter Lowe and his wife Tamara. But the shows progress. Booker T. Equity LLC, under CEO Joseph Johnson, bought LifeWin, Inc. Get motivated seminars and related companies in January. Reporter in the Tampa Tribune that the company makes its money by referring participants to the seminar business, investment advisory expensive monitoring workshops and courses provide. So this mid-sized stadium events with big name celebrities in the end will result in essentially a turnover.

Transition to digital

Self-Improvement Services are increasingly through audio, video and Internet delivered. Coaching is conducted by telephone. May get tired of the way motivational speaker on life tele-seminars and webinars. This expands their market to consumers who do not want to spend money on travel and accommodation. Gurus can also e-courses available, the convenience of consumers.

Guru

goes too far

Another setback for the movement was self-help self-help guru James Ray in 2009 in Sedona, AZ flop sweat lodge, where three people died and Mr. Ray was finally sentenced in June 2011. He was sentenced to two years in prison for each death, although he was not convicted of manslaughter. Ray must complete 85% of their sentences and can be imprisoned for 600 days. This event shows to go the extremes that some consumers in search of enlightenment, and how easily they are manipulated.

Books

flat is the new lineup. There were no blockbusters in the last year or the year before when the market was flooded with political content. Market Data estimates that sales of self-improvement books worth $ 776 million in 2011 and will cost $ 854 million in 2014.

Motivational speaker

These segments sales for the 10 best speakers in addition to the operations of Franklin Covey Co., are estimated at U.S. $ 336 million last year. Court signals it will decide constitutionality of health care mandate

Jonathan Ernst / Reuters

Health care overhaul supporters rally on the sidewalk outside ongoing legal arguments over the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on March 26 at the Supreme Court.

By Tom Curry, msnbc.com National Affairs Writer

Updated at 3:10 pm ET:? After the first day of oral arguments in challenges?to the landmark 2010 health care law, it seems clear that Supreme Court will not let a procedural tax?issue stand in the way of deciding the constitutionality of the law.

?If there were any members of the court who were looking for an off ramp ? who did not want to decide this case now during an election year, this would have been the way to go,? said NBC's Pete Williams after hearing the first day's arguments. But ?none of them seem to want to take that,? he said.

At issue Monday was a law called the Anti-Injunction Act. Does that law require that those who challenge the penalty for failing to buy insurance actually pay the penalty first? That won?t occur until 2015, after the insurance purchase requirement takes effect.

The question hinged on the justices accepting the contention that the penalty is effectively a tax.

AUDIO ONLY: The Supreme Court takes up the fate of the Obama administration's overhaul of the nation's health care system. Listen to the entire oral arguments from day one.

After hearing Monday?s argument, Williams reported that ?there didn?t seem to be a single member of the Supreme Court that bought that argument.?

?I don?t believe there?s a single justice on the court who believes that it?s a tax. End of that question. So we?re obviously going to go on to the main event which is the individual mandate which will be argued tomorrow,? Williams said.

Monday?s argument was the prelude for the main event: Tuesday?s two hours of argument over whether Congress has the power to require that almost every American purchase health insurance.

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli told the justices, "This case presents issues of great moment, and the Anti-Injunction Act does not bar the Court's consideration of those issues."

Read the transcript of Monday's oral argument

One justice, Samuel Alito, focused on the apparent inconsistency in the government's argument that the penalty?is not a tax, under the terms of the Anti-Injunction Act -- and yet the government also will claim in Tuesday's oral argument that when Congress created the individual mandate and?the penalty for failing to buy insurance,?it was acting under its constitutional power to tax.

This courtroom sketch by Art Lien shows Solicitor General Donald Verrilli speaking to Justice Antonin Scalia on March 26, 2012 as he argues his case before the Supreme Court.

Verrilli said, "Congress has authority under the taxing power to enact a measure not labeled as a tax ... ."

In a question to?Verrilli, Alito said, "Today you are arguing that the penalty is not a tax. Tomorrow you are going to be back and you will be arguing that the penalty is a tax. Has the Court ever held that something that is a tax for purposes of the taxing power under the Constitution is not a tax under the Anti-Injunction Act?"

Verrilli replied,?"No, Justice Alito, but the Court has held...?that something can be a constitutional exercise of the taxing power whether or not it is called a tax."

Click here to listen to that exchange between Verrilli and Justice Alito

He said, "the nature of the inquiry that we will conduct tomorrow is different from the nature of the inquiry that we will conduct today. Tomorrow the question is whether Congress has the authority under the taxing power to enact it" and the?precise words used in the law don't have a crucial?effect on that question.

At least two justices, Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, seemed to accept the government's contention that the penalty was not a tax, with Ginsburg saying "this is not a revenue-raising measure, because, if it's successful, they won't -- nobody will pay the penalty and there will be no revenue to raise"

Click here to listen to that exchange between?Long and Justice Ginsburg

Since the plaintiffs challenging the ACA had not made the Anti-Injunction Act argument, the justices appointed lawyer Robert Long to argue for the position that no one can file suit against the ACA?s individual insurance mandate until after the penalty on those who fail to buy insurance has been assessed.

Art Lien/AFP/Getty Images

This courtroom sketch by Art Lien shows attorney Robert A. Long speaking March 26, 2012 as he argues his case before the Supreme Court.

As soon as President Barack Obama signed the ACA into law, several states and private organization filed suits to overturn it, arguing that the Constitution gave Congress no power to force people to buy insurance.

Long pointed out in his brief that the text of the ACA says the penalty imposed on people who don?t purchase health insurance shall be ?assessed and collected in the same manner as taxes??-- so it is effectively a tax.

Long also said if Congress had wanted to create an exception to the Anti-Injunction Act in this case it would have done so when it passed the ACA in 2010.

?Related: Individual mandate will be in Supreme Court spotlight

He argued that for the Supreme Court to decide now on the constitutionality of the ACA ?would be contrary to the policy that courts avoid deciding constitutional issues unless it is necessary to so do.?

nd it would premature, he said, for the court to act since it?s possible that Congress ?could amend or repeal the Affordable Care Act at some point before penalties are assessed and collected, beginning in 2015. An amendment (to the law) could avoid the need for this Court to decide the constitutional issue presented in this case.?

But despite those arguments there?s tremendous pressure on the high court to resolve the uncertainty over the health care overhaul now?-- since many of the provisions of the law are interrelated and the court itself has created the expectation that it will finally settle the constitutional issue.

Recommended: Health care ruling could send fight back to Congress

Arguing the case on Monday for 90 minutes were Long, Verrilli, and former Assistant Attorney General Gregory Katsas, now in private practice, representing the state of Florida and other states and the National Federation of Independent Business.

NBC's Pete Williams contributed to this report.
