E-mail Selling ? An Art You Can Learn - Local Marketing Manager ...

Posted by cagoraman on 28th June, 2012 ?

When you first start out as an internet marketer, choosing your sales methods can be a little overwhelming. There are just so many ways that you can make money online! Many internet marketers end up choosing marketing via e-mail as the best method for them. It is most often easier to convince people who are interested in what you have to say to buy from you than it is to try and drive traffic and sell to them without a previous connection. There are definitely multiple strategies you can use when marketing through email. You can find some strategies you can adopt to increase the effectiveness of your e-mail marketing campaigns below.

Listing too many sales offers in one e-mail will cripple your sales instead of increasing them. If you try to promote too many offers in one e-mail you run the risk of overwhelming your recipients as well as creating e-mails so long that nobody will want to read all the way through them! If you focus on only one product in your e-mails then you will definitely experience a higher sales volume. Focusing on one message will help you create selling messages that are incredibly hard to resist. If you want more sales then only sell one at a time. Very many people have a tough time with an approach that uses The Intervestor and making certain decisions, but unfortunately that is a fact of business life. That one aspect is among many that you will need to face and either accept and deal with or not.

Since you are new, then unless you have read and learned something you will be facing great uncertainty. For a while, at least, you will feel like there is no end to what you have to learn with this model of business. The issue of mistakes in business need not be only because you are learning and mistakes are to be expected. The difference is with more experience the mistakes are fewer. Our recommendations are never passed along to you untried or not proven, and so you can continue reading with utmost confidence. Some people may advise you to misspell certain words or not to include particular phrases because the spam filters will filter your e-mails. This won?t become a concern for you as long as you keep your business honest and product legitimate products. The funny thing is that the spam filters will probably mark one of these ?disguised? subject lines as spam quicker than one that is not misspelled or contains characters to hide its intent. How many times have you trashed an e-mail because the subject line looked shady?

Try not to send out too many emails. There are those who believe you should try to send emails every day or perhaps every other day. This could really be overkill. Think about the time and effort involved in coming up with original information daily to put into your emails. What?s more, when the people on your mailing list get used to receiving another email from you every single day trying to sell them stuff, they?ll just start deleting your emails unread. It is possible to turn your buyers off if you bother them too much. It is sort of like being the internet marketing equivalent of the person who follows you all around a store commenting on everything you pick up until you finally just leave because you are annoyed! What we find exciting about doing IM is you can choose just one of the things we are talking about, here, and test and optimize your campaigns for the best conversions. But this just goes back to the concept of testing because even having an open mind to try something, if only once, is the smart thing to do. While Internet Marketing has been used successfully over the years, it may not work with your model or you just do not want to take the time to test it. Yet, as individuals, we do have our preferences even if they can be based on what is not ideal, etc.

If you are really new, then you have to know the importance of performing background research on any method that you are not familiar with. You know the old saying that most people who buy IM information never use it, and that can easily lead to knowing methods that you have never tried. The thing about this is it is totally understandable for beginners to IM to have this kind of unfortunate luck. What can also muddle the whole picture are those who had bad results using solid methods, and then those people can malign the method as being bad. There are other situations in which due diligence is a great idea, and it is not always with buying something for your business.

There are artistic elements to email marketing. Many internet marketers do not realize this, and that is why you get so many messages that sound the same, are poorly written and are full of easily fixable mistakes. A lot just fail to get it because they try to make the sale way too early. It really is necessary to learn about email marketing because there are many elements that contribute to a successful campaign. You will get better with it as long as you do those things and always keep working at it. So you have read this and maybe it is new to you, and that is fine because you have to keep learning. If you are wondering about the possibilities available using Affiliate Marketing in your web business, then you should be excited because there are quite a few. Performing additional research regarding any new marketing approach is simply the smart thing to do, and you will always pick-up valuable information.

However, having said that we must caution you about getting too comfortable with only doing one thing which is remaining in the learning phase.

If that scenario is you, then start slowly but be sure you force your self to do something each business day. Just do not forget that you will never make a thin dime without positive action on your goals and business plan.

Russia's Putin wants new economy, warns on protests

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to reassure investors on Thursday that he is committed to building a "new economy" through liberal reforms and privatization, and said he would not let protests against his rule spill over into civil unrest.

But in his first big speech to investors since his return to the Kremlin in May, Putin offered nothing new and not everyone was convinced he will do any more to carry out promises of economic and political reforms in his new six-year term than in his last 12 years as Russia's paramount leader.

"He was saying the right things to this audience, but the impact of those words is becoming less and less," said Roland Nash, chief investment strategist at Moscow-based hedge fund Verno Capital. "What we really need to see is implementation - and if they get that right there's a major opportunity."

Addressing the main complaints about business in Russia, Putin said he would press on with the sale of non-strategic state assets, fight corruption, reduce red tape, strengthen property rights and cut Russia's reliance on energy exports.

Privatization, he said, must be fair and honest, and open to foreigners - a reference to deals in the past that allowed a few Russian businessmen to amass wealth and power.

"We have worked out an entire program of large-scale reform. It has received broad public support. I see its fulfillment as my primary task as president," Putin told an annual investment forum in St Petersburg, the cradle of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.

But in a 45-minute speech at Russia's answer to Davos, Putin made clear there was no revolution coming in his thinking. Instead, he underlined the need for economic and political stability and announced no new policy initiatives.

The message was that Russia is strong and stable, and will reform at its own pace and in its own way as it builds a "new economy - an economy resistant to all kinds of shocks and capable of strong growth in a tough external climate."

WARNING TO OPPONENTS

Putin at times showed some of his old swagger, beginning his speech by depicting Russia as a strong country in a better state than many others, particularly Europe's debt-stricken economies.

He finished it with words of warning for the organizers of the biggest protests against his rule since he first rose to power in 2000.

"Anyone who considers himself a politician is obliged to express his position exclusively within the confines of the law," said the former KGB spy.

Indicating how seriously he takes the protests, Putin hinted that he would depict them as a threat to the very state itself and use this as grounds for a crackdown if they got out of hand.

He acknowledged that a desire for change often brought progress but added that "it becomes counterproductive and even dangerous if it leads to the destruction of civil peace and of the state itself."

Putin was elected president with almost two-thirds of the votes in March and protests against his domination of Russian politics, mainly confined to big cities, have become less frequent since then.

Even so, a rally in Moscow attracted tens of thousands of people this month and although he has strong support in the countryside, Putin faces more open political opposition than at any time during his eight years as president until 2008 and four years as prime minister from then until May.

Protests have continued despite a sharp increase in the size of fines for protesters who step out of line and clear signals from Putin that he is losing patience with the protests.

"I think Putin is a master of phrases. But in fact it's obvious that the civil peace is in fact undermined by the rigging of elections, undemocratic authorities and their unwillingness to go," said Gennady Gudkov, an opposition leader.

"HEARD IT ALL BEFORE"

Aware that he faces skepticism from investors as well as the political opposition, Putin reiterated his commitment to a sound fiscal policy, a floating currency and free capital flows.

"Russia not only needs a deficit-free budget but a budget with a reserve of resilience," Putin said.

In another move to reassure investors, Putin named Boris Titov, the former head of a business lobby group, as his ombudsman to help defend the rights of company owners and directors in court battles.

Putin said Russia would not impose restrictions on capital flows - $80 billion left the country last year in a sign of a lack of confidence in its economy - and underlined how far it has come since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

But some investors said they had heard similar words too often in the past to believe they would see action now.

A Western banker said: "He spent a lot of his time making the case that the rest of the world is a mess and we are strong ... He was saying: Don't tell us how to put our house in order when you aren't able to yourselves."

Vladimir Yakunin, head of state-owned Russian Railways and a Putin ally, said the speech suggested that the state would continue to play a significant role in the economy even though Putin reiterated his commitment to reducing it.

"When we talk about the state getting out of the economy, we should understand that the (main) source of investment in the developed countries is the state budget," said Yakunin, who heads Russia's fourth-largest company with sales of $40 billion.

Tasty booty in Spain as crisis spawns crop theft

SANT CLIMENT DE LLOBREGAT, Spain (AP) ? Drop those cherries, you're under arrest. Crops and cops are converging along Spain's journey through economic crisis: People enduring hardship are stealing the earth's bounty from farmers to help get by from day to day.

Police have added the patrolling of farmland ? sometimes on horseback ? to their list of daily tasks. Farmers in some areas are teaming up to carry out nighttime patrols on their own.

In villages near farming areas, several thousand paramilitary Civil Guards, regional and local police are even setting up checkpoints to sniff out not drugs or drunken drivers but stolen fruit or farming equipment, like copper wire used in irrigation systems. The Civil Guard says sometimes its officers mount "cage operations" ? sealing off whole villages to check cars and trucks for, say, pilfered pears.

The stolen goods are mainly for resale: The food ends up in small roving street markets and the metal goes to scrap dealers. Last year alone more than 20,000 thefts were reported at Spanish farms. The Interior Ministry says it has no comparative figures from other years, or for so far in 2012. But authorities and farm groups blame the thefts on Spain's economic crisis and say they are a big enough problem for the patrols, which began last season, to stay in force this year.

Here in Sant Climent, a village of 4,000 just outside Barcelona in the northeastern Catalonia region, the booty this time of year is cherries ? dark red, shiny and sweet ? dangling like ornaments from stubby trees in orchards rising up the slopes of a river valley. They're everywhere, with people selling them from their front doorsteps and on stands inside bars for ?8 a kilo ($4.50 a pound). A drawing of a cherry adorns the mayor's business card.

What is happening is hardly an invasion of starving unemployed people gorging themselves on cherries and trudging back into town with red-stain criminal evidence all over them. Nor is Spain's agricultural sector, which accounts for about 3 percent of GDP, in jeopardy. But the theft reflects a real problem for Spain's farmers and is a reflection of how harsh times are making ordinary people turn to crime.

"This has emerged because of social alarm. Because of the crisis, crime is up," said the local police chief, Ernesto Banos. "And when cherry season comes around, people say, 'what now, cherries? OK, let's go get them."

The usual suspects can be surprising, or not. "Retirees, unemployed people, young people," said Banos.

Sure, at some point we've all climbed a fence and stolen a neighbor's apple. And in Spain, theft from farms ? an unguarded field is an easy target ? has always been around to some degree.

"But the increase that has taken place since the crisis started a few years ago has been spectactular," said Estrella Larrazabal, spokeswoman for a farm association called Asaja. "Thieves take anything they can get their hands on."

And things have happened in the Spanish countryside that make it look like the Wild West, or in some cases, Wall Street.

? A rancher in central Spain went out one morning to view his 200-head herd of cattle and found two prized calves which had just been released into the pack shot in the head at point-blank range, and perfectly slaughtered. They were to have been prized breeders. But only the bony carcasses, with heads attached, remained in the muddy field. "Those animals were phenomenal. They were spectacular. Really fat, very well treated, and after five or six days in the field, they killed them," said the rancher, Eulogio Morales.

? A farmer in Cordoba caught some men stealing plowing equipment from him. They were arrested, tried, convicted and fined ?90 ($115) each. But they came back to his farm repeatedly demanding he pay the fine, and eventually threatened to kill him if he did not. The farmer, Ignacio Fernandez de Mesa, wore a hidden recording device during the last showdown, and nabbed them. A new trial on the death threat charge is pending. "I stood up to them" Fernandez de Mesa said. "I was waiting for them."

? Sheep rancher and lemon grower Vicente Carrion, head of the local branch of a farm lobby in the lush eastern region of Murcia, said thieves plan their hits according to what crops are getting good prices. So they are like futures traders, only instead of monitoring oil or gold, they watch artichoke or orange prices. "If there is no price, they don't touch it." Carrion said. "Prices are not stable over the course of the year. When they peak, that is when they strike."

Carrion says he knows of cases where gangs have stolen up to 5,000 kilos (2.3 tons) of oranges in one go. They act in broad daylight, picking the fruit under the thick cover of leafy groves, packing them in crates and loading them in trucks. Non-tree crops require a bit more stealth. "At night, they act when the moon is full. It is bright. They sneak in and steal your artichokes," Carrion said.

In Sant Climente, police say that every night they man checkpoints looking for stolen countryside goodies. The town is small, so strangers' faces stand out, and officers also know what kind of vehicles to look out for: "Usually beaten up old vans," said Joan Prunera, a Catalan regional police chief from a neighboring town who is helping out with the patrols. Minutes after he spoke, a farmer phoned in a tip: Someone was out there trying to sell a chain saw and an electrical generator, both apparently stolen.

High up on a hill amid a grove of some 1,500 cherry trees, their trunks about the thickness of a man's shin, grower Domenec Tugas and his wife Pilar patiently pick cherries. They grow six varieties, all of which probably look the same to non-cherry people. He laments the need for the police patrols that make their way up into his land in all- terrain vehicles on narrow, unpaved roads.

"People have always stolen a bit. You are used to that. But with the crisis it has gone up," said Tugas, a ruddy-cheeked man of 69 with an easy smile. He wore a straw hat against a hot, hazy sun, the air thick and muggy. He said that just last weekend he called in police to scare off two young guys on a motorcycle who were helping themselves to his fruit.

But there is one intruder he cannot fight, at least not on his own.

"Wild boars. They weigh up to 90 kilos (200 pounds). They come in and ram into the trees to knock them down," Tugas said. "It is for their little ones to eat. They love cherries."

Mubarak health drama adds to Egypt uncertainty

CAIRO (Reuters) - Hosni Mubarak's transfer to a Cairo military hospital from prison after officials said the ousted leader had suffered a health crisis created a fresh sense of uncertainty for Egyptians as they awaited the result of a weekend presidential poll.

Senior officers and military sources gave various accounts overnight of the 84-year-old Mubarak's condition, including that he was in a coma and on life support. But they said he was not clinically dead, as state media reported for a time on Tuesday.

Mubarak's health has been a subject of frequent speculation since he was jailed for life on June 2, casting his shadow over the political transition and reminding the nation that, 16 months after his fall, few questions have been answered about where Egypt is heading and whether democracy will take root.

The Muslim Brotherhood, the former president's long-time adversary, declared victory for their candidate Mohamed Morsy after a presidential run-off vote on Saturday and Sunday. Rival Ahmed Shafik, a former air force chief like Mubarak and his last prime minister, has challenged the claim and says he is ahead.

But whoever is declared winner - an announcement is due to come on Thursday - the next president's powers have already been curbed in a last-minute decree issued by the ruling generals after they ordered the Islamist-led parliament dissolved.

Reflecting the multiple levels of uncertainty, newspaper headlines pondering the outcome of the presidential vote outcome vied with those reporting the unclear status of the former president's health after his evening transfer from the medical unit of Cairo's Tora prison to the Maadi military hospital.

"Contradiction around the death of Mubarak after he suffers a clot to the brain," wrote Al-Ahram newspaper. Below it the headline read, "Most critical 48 hours in Egypt's history" - a reference to the election committee review of appeals from each candidate over alleged voting violations by the other camp.

"Mubarak in a coma between life and death," wrote Al-Akhbar, below a headline highlighting the row between Morsy and Shafik over who won: "Future president in the realm of the unknown."

A few dozen people gathered outside the hospital overnight.

Some were merely curious bystanders who heard a famous patient had arrived, others congregated in support. One held up a poster of Mubarak, resplendent in ceremonial uniform, with the caption: "History will be the judge."

"Mubarak has been dead since his people sentenced him to prison and threw him in Tora; His people wronged him and did not give him his rights," said Loola Yamany, 50. She was one of a handful of people there on Wednesday morning.

Many Egyptians have been skeptical. Some protested when he was not sentenced to death. Many others suspect fellow officers, who pushed him aside after 30 years to appease the protesters, of conniving to give him a more comfortable confinement.

Mubarak's legal team has been pressing to have him moved from the prison hospital to a better-equipped facility, saying he was not receiving adequate treatment for his condition. However, prison authorities previously refused to let him go.

"The former president's condition is critical after it deteriorated because of a lack of good care and treatment inside the Tora prison hospital, so he was taken to the nearest hospital," Mubarak's defense lawyer Farid al-Deeb told Al-Ahram.

CONFUSION

For most Egyptians, the identity of their next president was a more pressing concern than the fate of their last.

"The news about Mubarak's health is all speculation. We should depend on reality. We can't keep following rumors," said Maher Eid Hemdan, a 59-year-old pensioner, in central Cairo.

"As for the elections, may the right man win."

There has been no clear statement from independent medical experts on what ails Mubarak, though state media have reported a variety of illnesses from shortage of breath to heart attacks.

The state news agency's report that he was "clinically dead", a condition normally defined by the lack of heartbeat and breathing and one from which patients can be revived, was followed by swift denials from military sources. It was unclear whether at any point he had reached that stage, though some sources did say he was dependent on a machine to breathe.

General Said Abbas, a member of the ruling military council, told Reuters that, while Mubarak had suffered a stroke, "any talk of him being clinically dead is nonsense."

Another military source said he was in a coma and on life support, while a third military source described the former leader as "almost stable," without elaborating.

Private television al-Hayat broadcast video which it said was of Mubarak's move. The images showed a patient on a stretcher being transferred from an ambulance into hospital.

Al-Arabiya television said Mubarak's wife Suzanne arrived on Tuesday night at the Maadi facility, where the last shah of Iran died after he was ousted in the 1979 Islamist revolution.

It is also the hospital where Anwar Sadat, Mubarak's predecessor, was declared dead after he was gunned down by Islamists during a military parade in 1981. Mubarak, who was a little remarked vice president at the time, then took charge.

Holy homosexual innuendo, Batman! - battleroyalewithcheese

LGBT1

As a celebration of Martin Eden?s recent Spandex graphic novel ? that follows the first all gay super-hero team ? this is the first in a short series of features that focus on the theme of LGBT representation in comic book culture. As an overview of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender representation in comic books this article is mostly limited to the more prevalent Marvel and DC universes because of their overall ubiquity (also for the sake of brevity), though it will touch briefly on Archie comics?s Kevin Keller, Dark Horse?s Buffy, and a few other sources just for good measure. As with any issues of equal representation this has been something that has evolved over time, arguably at a slower pace than other areas of media, and it hasn?t been without it?s controversy. It?s safe to say that there exists a decent contingent of comic book fans that fall into the LGBT camp so there is a large audience that want to read about homosexual superheroes, or at least see a fair reflection of reality. It?s been a bumpy ride with some faltering, stereotype laden, steps but there has been progress from the first appearance of a homosexual comic book character to the present crop of story lines that not only depict gay friendships and relationships but that blur the boundaries of gender identity and represent the truly diverse nature of sexuality and gender expression.

US TV show Queer as Folks?s cornucopia of gay cliches heavily featured comic books as positive reinforcement for gay culture when Mikey went from office worker, to comic book store owner, to comic book co-creator with Justin in creating gay superhero Rage. Similarly Marvel?s X-Men can in general, with it?s outcast mutants and stories about discrimination, be interpreted as frequently allegorical of LGBT equality issues, or indeed the concerns of any minority (which makes Sir Ian McKellan?s turn as Magneto, in the abominable X-Men 3, succumbing to the ?cure? all the more painful given his status as an adoptive queer patriarch.)

The most relevant period of comic book history for the representation of LGBT culture is the past 20 years; approximately since Northstar?s coming out in Marvel?s Alpha Flight in 1992. Prior to this any reference to a homosexual lifestyle was only subtly hinted at through heavily veiled references due to being banned by the Comics Code Authority in the United States. When, in 1989, this ban was overturned Marvel, DC, and other US based comic distributers that are governed by the CCA were able to openly make reference to homosexuality. This didn?t stop people inferring certain relationships however, the most obvious being that of Batman and Robin.

Batman and Robin enjoying ?quality time?.

The possible relationship between Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson has been a constant interpretation for decades, one that?s difficult to argue with, indeed Batgirl was introduced in1956 in an attempt to discredit the rumours started by psychologist Fredric Wertham?s book The Seduction of the Innocent that reported that the relationship between ??Batman? and his young friend ?Robin?? was inherently homosexual. Innuendo abounds in Batman and Robin?s relationship from lying in bed together to Robin tearing a naked Batman from the shower. Let?s face it, Robin?s costume is hot pants for crying out loud and that?s to say nothing of the bastion of camp that was Batman, the 1960?s TV series staring Adam West. Further allusions exist in Wonder Woman where the all female island of Paradise that appeared in 1941 and could be interpreted as plainly lesbian, or in the relationship between Mystique and Destiny in X-Men. Destiny was introduced in Uncanny X-Men in 1981 and spent a lot of time with Mystique, but nothing was ever said about their relationship and so it wasn?t until writer Chris Claremont revealed sometime after that he had intended them as lovers.

Though Northstar is most often quoted, due to popularity, as being the first openly gay comic book character this is not the case. Prior to Alpha Flight issue #106, the storyline where Northstar actually said the words ?I am gay? and that deals with him caring for a HIV positive surrogate daughter, there was Extra?o in DC Comics 1988 series Millennium. Extra?o unlike most other subsequent gay Superheros (with the possible exception of the Rawhide Kid, a gay cowboy who attracted negative attention for largely being the butt of innuendo) was an amalgam of almost every gay male stereotype, flashy, camp, referring to himself as ?Auntie?, he was later confirmed to be HIV positive following an encounter with an ?Aids Vampire? named Hemo-Globin ? all in all he was a mixture of hilariously dated clich?s that were more than a little insulting. DC also had a couple of homosexual characters crop up in Alan Moore?s seminal classic Watchmen, which alluded to a relationship between Captain Metropolis and Hooded Justice, that Moore later confirmed in 1988, along with the lesbian Silhouette character who was murdered with her lover in their bed.

Alpha Flight issue #10 reader?s letters.

In Alpha Flight (a series centred around a Canadian team reminiscent of the Avengers) Northstar?s sexuality was rarely discussed beyond issue #106 when he outed himself in an encounter with Major Mapleleaf who was disgruntled that Northstar?s surrogate baby daughter Joanne received gushing attention from the media when his own son Michael?s death from AIDS was shunned because of his homosexuality. Marvel was commended for taking on such a poignant subject when the fallout from the spread of AIDS during the 1980s was still being felt. Northstar?s outing was handled fairly well, he didn?t feel his sexuality was particularly anyones business but he publicly acknowledged it in a bid to increase media attention to HIV and AIDS health issues, certainly a well intentioned reason. What was a shame was that it never went much beyond that issue, and for a decade Northstar?s sexuality was largely ignored. But the word was out, there was a gay superhero and Marvel was quick to point out in issue #110 that the response was over 76% positive, though that didn?t stop some people from voicing some staggeringly small minded commentary ? see the responses Marvel printed in issue #110 (left).

Around the same time as this was happening at Marvel, DC introduced it?s first transsexual character in Kate Godwin who, as Coagula, had the ability to dissolve solids and liquify solids. Kate appeared in Doom Patrol in 1993 and was a male-to-female transsexual who at first appeared as a lesbian but was later involved with male characters too making her one of the only transgendered bisexual characters to appear in comics. Concurrently in Neil Gaiman?s fantastic Sandman series attempted to redress the lack of realistic representation of trans characters with Wanda, a pre-op transexual woman, in A Game of You. Wanda was a secondary character living in the same building as Barbie, the protagonist, as well as a lesbian couple Hazel and Foxglove. Gaiman?s writing has always garnered praise for its accurate portrayal of the full range of peoples despite the largely fantastical or supernatural universes that they tend to inhabit.

Roughly speaking the next LGBT appearance of note came from DC?s Midnighter and Apollo in Stormwatch in 1998. Midnighter is endowed with bioengineered strength and speed and has a tendency for highly violent vigilante justice. Apollo has a multitude of powers including flight, strength, invulnerability, and he can create blasts of solar energy. The pair have drawn comparisons as a gay teaming of Batman and Superman ? a fact backed up by Apollo, like Superman, being dependant on the sun for his powers. Midnighter and Apollo shared the first gay kiss in a comic in 2000, and have since married and adopted a daughter Jenny Quantum, but they have attracted their fair share of criticism for the sometimes particularly harsh treatment (one storyline has Apollo raped) and constant homophobic abuse they receive from villains with Alan Moore stating that the characters are an example of a ?strange attitude? that exists towards LGBT themes and also calling them ?vicious muscle queens.?

When Northstar joined Marvel?s X-Men in 2001 he later found himself becoming a mentor for gay teen mutant. Anole, introduced in 2003, was initially conceived as a character that would commit suicide following his parents negative reaction to his sexuality, Marvel eventually altered the story owing to the controversial nature so that Anole?s family was much more accepting. Anole?s sexuality was again only alluded to rather than stated outright and it wasn?t until after Northstar?s apparent death and in seeking the advice of fellow mutant Karma, who is openly lesbian, that he was officially outed in 2006. Anole later joins the young X-Men where he was joined by Jonas Graymalkin (introduced in 2008). Graymalkin is revealed as a 200 year old mutant that was trapped underground in a state of suspended animation having been buried by his father as a reaction to his sexuality. The pair become friends with Anole providing support for Graymalkin following the treatment he received at the hands of his father and they are amongst a very small group of gay comic characters that are friends rather than lovers.

Terry Berg coming out in Green Lantern issue #137

Green Lantern?s writers attracted controversy with a storyline in 2003 where Kyle Rayner?s 17 year old assistant Terry Berg is gay bashed by three homophobes after kissing his boyfriend, David, on the way home from a club. Previously Berg, a civilian and not a superhero, had come out to Kyle revealing the crush that he had on his boss ? Kyle, completely unaware, had been bragging about his relationship not noticing the jealously coursing through Terry. What followed was a moving scene of support from Kyle who reassured Terry that he had nothing to be scared or ashamed of and the pair formed a very strong friendship.

Because of their strong friendship, Kyle feels like a protective big brother of sorts so Green Lantern?s reaction to Terry?s assault and comatose state in Hate Crime is fairly extreme and filled with anger; he tortures the whereabouts of two of the assailants from the other and then nearly beats them to death in retaliation. Though Green Lantern?s emotive reaction is hypocritically deplorable the overall message of the story attempts to promote a more tolerant attitude (not just towards sexuality but race and appearance also), Terry is horrifyingly brutalised forcing the President to make a speech calling for education, and stating that ?tolerance and understanding begins at home.?

In 2006 DC re-introduced the Batwoman series with Kate Kane (rather than Kathy) as a lesbian who had been romantically involved with Renee Montoya, an openly lesbian former Police detective who takes on the role of Question when her mentor is killed. Kate Kane is depicted as a positive female character, a kickass lipstick lesbian, and has been remarked as being the most high profile gay character in DC?s roster. Willow from Dark Horse?s Buffy the Vampire Slayer series of comics, has always been a prominent and positive lesbian presence in comics, joined by her lovers Tara and Kennedy, a fellow witch and a powerful slayer respectively.

Willow and Kennedy in Buffy Series 8.

Buffy?s Season Eight series, that expands on the story beyond the run of the original TV show, even introduced a bit of girl on girl action for the slayer herself with a short story line involving a pair of sexual encounters with fellow slayer Satsu. The initial encounter comes as a bit of a shock to Buffy, and her friends, but while she engages at least one more time with Satsu she doesn?t identify as a lesbian, just as open to sexual experimentation. Dark Horse at least had no issue with showing the characters in bed together, and dispensed with the need for hints or allusions taking a more direct and honest route in their storytelling.

The Marvel?s Young Avengers and?Runaways featuring a new generation of teenage mutants have both had gay, lesbian and transgendered characters from the outset. In?Runaways Karolina Dean is an extraterrestrial lesbian character who was betrothed to fellow alien, but from a different race, Xavin. As a Skrull Xavin has the ability to shift his form and whilst initially Karolina shows no interest in having Xavin shift to a female form for her their relationship grows and so Xavin?s sexuality is fluid, frequently moving between genders, taking a female form for the sake of his/her love for Karolina. The relationship between the pair is brilliant for its complicated gender identity issues, with the characters taking time to bring up the blurred boundaries on the pages.

Karolina and Nico discuss Xavin in Runaways.

Hulking (Teddy) and Wiccan (Billy) in Young Avengers have a less complex relationship but have been in an openly gay teenage relationship pretty much from the start, with Billy coming out to his parents in issue #7 (their reaction is overwhelmingly positive). Billy and Teddy?s relationship is probably the most well rounded example of a gay romance in comic story lines, they show a genuine care for each other that is written into the flow of the narrative rather than being tacked on or sidelined and they are naturalistic and devoid of stereotyping. It even has the levity to bring up that Wiccan should change his name from his previous Asgardian mantle when news of his homosexuality breaks ? the implication being that ?ass guardian? would be the too easy insult to follow, showing that the series is not without it?s sense of humour and awareness.

Archie Comics introduced it?s first openly gay character in 2010 with Kevin Keller appearing in Veronica issue #202 and going on to have his own solo title this year bearing his name. Kevin Keller is a model student, ardent patriot, comes from a loving family, and is all round just too damned nice for his own good. His stories range from his past, his friends, to running for class president and being on the receiving end of some small minded homophobia. As with most Archie characters Keller is a bold, colourful, enthusiastic character and he just happens to be gay ? it?s another example of sexuality just being part of a personality rather than necessarily a feature, and the comic also hammers home the idea of the importance of family, and an enthusiasm for patriotically serving your country, all strong moral stances of importance to large amounts of the American populace. Kevin Keller is somewhat saccharine and at times sickeningly cloying, but it would be disingenuous to say it?s heart isn?t in the right place.

Billy comes out to his parents in Young Avengers issue #7

Some have complained that the depiction of LGBT characters in mainstream comics has been too heteronormative, that the characters are thoroughly integrated to the extent that the focus is on being a part of a heterosexual society rather than celebrating the diversity of queer culture and on the one hand this is true. The characters and relationships depicted, particularly early on, in the Marvel and DC universes are fair and even characters but not in your face about sexuality. Let?s remember though, that comics are typically read by children so it would be a touch inappropriate for Midnighter or Apollo to openly discuss the fun they had at the bear bar the night before. With more independent comics, ones that tend to have a slightly older audience, it?s more readily available to find a comic where the sexual orientation, and LGBT culture, is more at the forefront of the story and theme ? Spandex is one of many examples. The desexualisation of the homosexual relationship is not just an issue in comic books, mainstream movie?s are just as guilty of stripping away that layer of gay characters and this is something that hopefully will change ? gay characters kissing, or lying post-coitally in bed are on the increase.

Richter and Shatterstar, two of the characters not covered here, share a kiss in X-Factor issue #45

The recent announcement of Northstar?s wedding and the outing of Green Lantern, Alan Scott in DC?s The New 52 universe story Earth 2, highlights that homosexual characters in comic books are not going away ? even if it does seem to be more gay males than lesbian and transgendered characters. While some may be disappointed at the sometimes underwhelming depiction of sexual diversity in comic story lines it can?t be argued that they don?t have a reasonably vast and established presence ? indeed there are a whole host of characters not mentioned above ? and that presence for the most part receives the same treatment as any other aspect of the narrative; inclusion and equality are all anyone can ask for. Superhero and comic book story lines represent a mirror of the world, they explore similar themes and and issues that people face everyday the only difference is that they do them in an exaggerated world of fantasy, an escapist reality, and matters of sexual orientation, race, faith, politics and health all get the bulging, colourful, lycra costumed treatment. For a comic book fan there?s nothing more believable than having characters that you can identify with and respect. Comics can be fantastic tools of empowerment, they spread the message to take pride in who you are. It is your life, and you are super.

UFC set to stage 2,000th fight in company history

Barring any last-minute changes, the opening fight of the main card at UFC 147 on Saturday between Yuri Alcantara and Hacran Dias will carry a little more significance than normal.

It will mark the 2,000th fight in UFC history. The first came on Nov. 12, 1993, at McNichols Arena in Denver, when Gerard Gordeau opened UFC 1 by stopping Teila Tuli in just 26 seconds. Gordeau kicked Tuli in the face and reportedly knocked out three of his teeth.

Zuffa, which currently owns the company, took control of the UFC from Semaphore Entertainment Group in January 2001 and has promoted all of its shows since. In the pre-Zuffa days, the UFC had to move to states without athletic commissions in order to hold its events. It was banned from cable for a period of time and was infamously referred to as "human cockfighting" by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

UFC president Dana White was amazed by the achievement.

"This company runs so fast, most of the time we don't even stop to think about these milestones." White said. "But 2000 UFC fights is a pretty crazy number when you remember the UFC was supposed to be a one-and-done event.

"This weekend, we've got two huge shows in two different countries. On Friday, we're in Atlantic City with a great FX card headlined by a five rounder between Gray Maynard and Clay Guida, and then the next day we're in Brazil with a pay-per-view headlined by Wanderlei Silva versus Rich Franklin. The UFC has come a long way since fight No.1."

Alcantara and Dias will share a piece of history if there are no cancellations either on Friday or on Saturday's preliminary card. They are supposed to open the pay-per-view broadcast Saturday and if all goes according plan, they'll be in the 2,000th fight and the answer to a trivia question.

One of the great things about mixed martial arts, though, is that things don't always go as planned. The 2,000th bout will be held on Saturday and it will likely be between Alcantara and Dias, but stay tuned.

Guaranteed search engine optimization

As most of us which are already familiar with web advertising know classified ad web-sites are a extremely powerful strategy to marketplace your on the web or off line company. The truth that it truly is no cost and has tons of site visitors visiting every single day makes it a best choice for marketers which are not attempting to devote plenty of funds to obtain the word out about their enterprise. Needless to say just about every 1 has heard of Craigslist. Craigslist is often a wonderful alternative to marketplace mainly because of the millions of men and women that go to the website each and every day. On the other hand, occasionally Craigslist could be a discomfort within the butt. On Craigslist every person is viewed as a spammer until verified otherwise. It can turn out to be quite frustrating for those of us which are not spammers but are just attempting to

marketplace in an honest way.

Backpage.com is one more quite preferred web site. It also gets a decent quantity of targeted traffic, specially within the company chance section. My only fear for Backpage is that i see them becoming increasingly more like Craigslist inside the near future with all the rules that they?re instituting. It?s becoming definitely complicated and frustrating at times to post company ops there too.

Isisclassifieds.com is what I?ve identified to be an excellent option to Craigslist and Backpage. It has not gotten to the point of getting millions of visitors per day but but as a result it doesn?t view you as guilty until verified innocent. I attempt to marketplace on all 3 as a lot as achievable to make some balance in my advertising. You will find particular items that I enjoy and dislike about all 3 of these web site

but when I compare them to all of the other classified ad internet sites on the market, these are absolutely my leading 3. Isis has a truly easy sign in approach. They also have a fantastic selection for you to upload videos for people today to basically see what you might be advertising and marketing also as Google maps on exactly the same page.

Isisclassifieds.com, Backpage.com, and Craigslist all have created a fairly great model of by far the most powerful approach to aid on the internet marketers grow their idea. I support these 3 websites although there?s lots of room for all 3 to enhance. But in the end of the day, they?re No cost and which is the vital factor. I just wanted to express my opinion concerning the topic since I see a lot of folks uplifting other classified web sites which are not half as decent as these are.

HBT: Red Sox put Beckett on 15-day DL

We learned yesterday that Josh Beckett was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday due to right shoulder inflammation. Now he?s DL-bound.

The severity of the issue isn?t yet known, but Beckett will be eligible to rejoin the Red Sox before the end of the month. It?s another tough blow for a team that is having troubling digging their way out of the cellar in the American League East. The Red Sox have lost eight out of their 11 games to fall to 31-33 on the year.

Franklin Morales is scheduled to start in Beckett?s place Sunday against the Cubs. The 26-year-old southpaw has pitched exclusively in relief during his time with the Red Sox and hasn?t started a game in the big leagues since 2009 as a member of the Rockies.

Japan plans to restart two nuclear reactors. Will more follow?

Concerns about Japan's summer energy demand and the impact on the economy factored into decision, which many see as a victory for the powerful nuclear energy industry.

By Linda Sieg and Kiyoshi Takenaka,?Reuters / June 16, 2012

Japan on Saturday approved the resumption of nuclear power operations at two reactors despite mass public opposition, the first to come back on line after they were all shut down following the Fukushima crisis.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, his popularity ratings sagging, had backed the restarts for some time. He announced the government's decision at a meeting with key ministers, giving the go-ahead to two reactors operated by Kansai Electric Power Co at Ohi in western Japan.

The decision, despite public concerns over safety after the big earthquake and tsunami crippled the Fukushima plant, could open the door to more restarts among Japan's 50 nuclear power reactors.

"There is no such thing as a perfect score when it comes to disaster prevention steps," Trade Minister Yukio Edano told a news conference after the announcement.

"But, based on what we learned from the Fukushima accident, those measures that need to be taken urgently have been addressed, and the level of safety has been considerably enhanced (at the Ohi plant)," he said.

Edano, who holds the energy portfolio, said the government policy to reduce Japan's dependence on nuclear energy in the medium- to long-term was unchanged despite the decision.

The decision is a victory for Japan's still-powerful nuclear industry and reflects Noda's concerns about damage to the economy if atomic energy is abandoned following the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

The push to restart the two Ohi reactors, before a potential summer power crunch, also underscores the premier's eagerness to win backing from businesses worried about high electricity costs that could push factories offshore. Kansai Electric says it will take six weeks to get both reactors running fully.

Public backlash?

But the decision risks a backlash from a public deeply concerned about nuclear safety. As many as 10,000 demonstrators gathered outside Noda's office on Friday night amid a heavy police presence to denounce the restarts, urging the premier to step down and shouting "Lives matter more than the economy."

"Prime Minister Noda's rushed, dangerous approval of the Ohi nuclear power plant restart ignores expert safety advice and public outcry, and needlessly risks the health of Japan's environment, its people and its economy," environmental group Greepeace said in a statement.

Noda's own future is murky as he struggles to hold his fractious party together after cutting a deal with opposition rivals to double Japan's sales tax to 10 percent by 2015.

"I imagine there will be a fair number of (reactor) restarts by next year. The government under Noda is surprisingly eager," said Jeffrey Kingston, director of Asian studies at Temple University's Japan campus.

Nuclear power supplied almost 30 percent of electricity needs before the March 2011 disaster, which triggered meltdowns at Fukushima, spewing radiation and forcing mass evacuations.

The accident destroyed public belief in the "safety myth" promoted by Japanese nuclear power advocates for decades.

Activists have collected more than 7.5 million signatures on a petition urging an end to atomic power. Protesters have poured into the street almost daily over the past week.

All 50 reactors were shut down for maintenance or safety checks in the months since the accident. The government had placed a priority on gaining the approval of local communities for the Ohi restarts to avert July-August power shortages.

Critics say the government was too hasty in signing off on the restarts, especially given delays in setting up a new, more independent nuclear regulatory agency.

Public trust in regulators was tattered by evidence that cozy ties with utilities were a key reason Fukushima operator Tokyo Electric Power Co was unprepared for the tsunami, and subsequent signs that relations remain far too snug.

Parliament's lower house on Friday approved legislation to create a new atomic regulator, but getting it up and running will take months. That could force the government to go slower on restarts, though some politicians are keen to forge ahead.

"We can no longer go back to a life that depends on candles," ruling party heavyweight Yoshito Sengoku said in an interview with the Sankei newspaper this week.

The Nuclear and Industry Safety Agency, the current watchdog, has approved stress tests for Shikoku Electric Power Co Inc's 890-megawatt No.3 reactor in Ikata, southern Japan. Next on the list for possible approval are two Hokkaido Electric Power reactors in Tomari, northern Japan and Hokuriku Electric's two in Shika, western Japan.

"Basically he (Noda) doesn't want to wait but ... it would attract criticism so the government would be cautious if they are clever," said Hiroshi Takahashi, a Fujitsu Research Institute fellow and member of a panel advising the government on energy policies.

(AP) ? Francois Hollande is the man in charge after his Socialist Party swept France's parliamentary election. Voters welcomed the French president's vision of injecting government money into Europe's economies in hopes of helping the joint euro currency stave off disaster.

Socialists now have an unprecedented lock on politics in France, and plan to use it to raise taxes on big banks and oil companies, levy a 75-percent tax on incomes higher than ?1 million ($1.26 million) a year, and hire 60,000 teachers. Hollande's strong domestic mandate will let him push back in global economic talks against the budget cuts being demanded by Germany, which Greece and other indebted countries say are driving them deeper into the financial abyss by suffocating growth.

France's election Sunday also gave the far right National Front a toehold in parliament, a small but symbolic victory for a party that wants to stop immigration, dump the euro currency and decries the so-called "Islamization" of France. The conservative UMP party of former President Nicolas Sarkozy, which dominated the outgoing parliament, suffered the biggest losses.

The balloting to elect 577 lawmakers for France's lower ? and more powerful ? house of parliament came on the same day that conservatives won a parliamentary election in Greece.

With final results still coming in, pollsters estimated France's Socialists and their closest allies will hold between 313 and 315 seats, well over the 289 needed for a majority and exempting them from horse-trading with far-leftists who oppose some of Hollande's pro-European policies.

"This score exemplifies strong confidence in the president," said Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici, who won his own race for an Assembly seat. "This gives a spinal column to the government and strengthens it ... our commitments will be honored. We will not do any austerity."

Sarkozy's UMP party went from 304 seats in the old Assembly to an estimated 214 in the new one, after Sarkozy himself lost his re-election bid to Hollande just six weeks ago.

Hollande now has a free hand to push forward with his plans. He wants to crack down on tax shelters and encourage companies to reinvest their profits. Also on tap is requiring banks to split their traditional deposit-and-loan activities from their speculative bets in the financial markets.

Hollande's government has already made good on a controversial plan to lower the retirement age for some French workers to 60 from 62. He also slashed the salaries of government ministers by 30 percent ? a nod to a public wary of the much-criticized bling of Sarkozy's reign.

Hollande's pro-growth attitude is also attracting attention elsewhere in Europe. France is the eurozone's second-biggest economy and, along with powerhouse Germany, has a major role in EU policy and providing bailouts to weaker countries.

Hollande presented other European leaders last week with a new "growth pact" including ?120 billion ($151 billion) worth of measures around the continent to stimulate growth, the Journal du Dimanche newspaper reported. A French official confirmed the report but would not provide details.

The French-German tandem has come under strain in recent months, not least because Chancellor Angela Merkel has opposed Hollande's vocal push for government stimulus and is defending an austerity package that she worked out with Sarkozy, a fellow conservative.

Even against the recent throw-the-bums-out mindset in many parts of Europe, the turnaround for France's Socialists was remarkable. The party was riven for much of the past decade by personal infighting and ideological discord.

On Sunday, the Socialists gained more than 100 seats in the Assembly ? nearly all from the conservatives, discredited in the eyes of many voters after years of economic difficulties and high joblessness. Last fall, the Socialists seized control of the upper house of parliament, the Senate.

No matter who is in charge, there's plenty of challenges ahead.

France's debts are huge and its unemployment rate recently rose to 10 percent ? the highest rate in 13 years. The little-known ratings agency Egan-Jones Ratings downgraded French state debt to BBB+ from A- on Thursday, warning that French banks may soon come under strain.

"The work before us is immense. Nothing will be easy," Socialist Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said, acknowledging that France's financial situation is "difficult."

The anti-immigration National Front party won two seats in Sunday's election ? the most it has had since 1988, when the political system was more favorable to extremist candidates. Party leader Marine Le Pen lost her quest for a seat in the industrial north by just 118 votes, but her 22-year-old niece ? Marion Marechal-Le Pen ? won her race in the southeast and will become France's youngest lawmaker.

Marine Le Pen has revamped the party to try to shed its reputation as racist and anti-Semitic. She placed third in the presidential race. The party, known for its sharp-tongued critics, will get a high-profile platform from which to grill Hollande's ministers during weekly question time in the often-boisterous Assembly.

"This is a first step toward future elections," Marechal-Le Pen told BFM-TV.

In an election subplot, prominent Socialist Segolene Royal ? the mother of Hollande's four children and the runner-up to Sarkozy in the 2007 presidential vote ? lost her race in western France and her bid to become Parliament speaker. Her rival was a breakaway Socialist who had drawn the support of Hollande's current companion, journalist Valerie Trierweiler.

Sunday's result also exposed voter fatigue, coming so soon after Hollande's own victory on May 6. The turnout of 56 percent was the lowest recorded in modern France.

In a well-off area of central Paris, voter Eve Baume said she cast her ballot for the local socialist "because I've been waiting for change for a long time."

"I wanted to support Francois Hollande, the government and its projects," she said.

Pascal Albe, a voter from the working-class Paris suburb of Ivry-sur-Seine, said he generally votes for the right but he thought Hollande should have a Socialist-led parliament.

"Otherwise the country will be paralyzed, and especially now, we don't need that," he said.

China's first woman astronaut takes spotlight

China is sending its first woman into outer space this weekend, prompting a surge of national pride as the rising power takes another step toward putting a space station in orbit within the decade.

Liu Yang, a 33-year-old fighter pilot, will join two other astronauts aboard the Shenzhou 9 spacecraft when it lifts off from a remote Gobi Desert launch site on Saturday evening (6:37 p.m. Beijing time, 6:37 a.m. ET).

They will attempt a crew-controlled docking for the first time with the uncrewed Tiangong 1 module, which was launched last September as part of China's exploratory preparations for a space lab. The module is now orbiting 213 miles (343 kilometers) above Earth.

Rendezvous and docking exercises between the two vessels will be an important hurdle in China's efforts to acquire the technological and logistical skills needed to run a full space lab that can house astronauts for long stretches.

China's aspirations
Last October, China launched a robotic Shenzhou 8 module that successfully performed a remote-controlled docking with Tiangong 1 ("Heavenly Palace") in preparation for this month's crewed mission. Space program spokeswoman Wu Ping told reporters that Shenzhou 9 would make two dockings with Tiangong 1 ? the first by remote control, and the second under manual control.

"After we have realized both the auto and manual docking technology, we can completely master this technology," she said. After spending more than 10 days in space, the astronauts will travel back to Earth aboard the capsule, landing on Western Chinese grasslands with the help of parachutes, Wu said.

Beijing is still far from catching up with the established space superpowers: the United States and Russia. The Tiangong 1 is a trial module, not the building block of a space station. But the docking mission will be the latest show of China's growing prowess in space, alongside its growing military and diplomatic presence, and comes while budget restraints and shifting priorities have held back U.S. launches of astronauts.

The mission demonstrates China's commitment to "long-term human spaceflight" and marks a test of "the technological capabilities requisite for a future permanent space station," said Joan Johnson-Freese, an expert on the Chinese space program at the U.S. Naval War College in Rhode Island.

    1. Incoming! Solar storms are heading our way

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: A double shot of solar particles is due to hit Earth's magnetic field on Saturday, but not to worry ? the most noticeable effect is likely to be heightened auroral displays.

Focus on the female
Workers at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center began fueling the mission's Long March 2F rocket on Friday, but on the eve of liftoff, the international spotlight was focused on the woman spaceflier rather than the rocket she would ride.

Speaking to the official Xinhua news agency, Liu said she "yearns to experience the wondrous, weightless environment of space, see the Earth and gaze upon the motherland."

"Thank you for the confidence put in my by the motherland and the people, for giving me this chance to represent China's millions of women by going into space," Liu later told reporters at the launch center.

Medical experts who helped select Shenzhou 9's crew have said that female astronauts must meet the same criteria as men, and then some, according to the China Daily. Female Chinese astronauts must be married and preferably be mothers, the newspaper said, citing concerns that radiation would "harm their fertility" and thus their prospects for future children.

Liu, from the poor and populous central province of Henan, has been praised in state media for her nerves of steel. Multiple media outlets told how Liu safely landed her fighter jet after a bird strike that left the cockpit glass covered with blood.

Pros and cons voiced online
China's latest space mission has attracted even more than the usual national attention, thanks to Liu's presence. Her selection to the mission team rapidly became the top subject on the country's Twitter-like microblogging service Sina Weibo, with 33 million posts.

"Liu Yang, on the eve of becoming our first woman is space, is the pride of Henan," wrote one user.

But some wondered if the money poured into space ambitions would be better used on Earth, where China is still a developing country and grappling with more mundane issues like food safety and a growing rich-poor divide. "What use does Shenzhou 9 have? Will it help the people to not starve?" another Weibo user wrote.

The two men on the mission, who are both senior colonels in China's air force, have gotten far less of the spotlight: The commander is Jing Haipeng, a veteran astronaut. The third crew member is space rookie Liu Wang.

"You could say this mission is a combination of the old and the new, and coordination between the male and female," said Wu Ping, the space program spokeswoman.

Wu said the launch of the first Chinese woman into space will be a "landmark event."

"Arranging for women astronauts to fly is not only a must for the development of human spaceflight, but also the expectation of the public," she said.
