Program
The South Africa Study Program is an extension of an interdisciplinary course (AFAM&AST 485.01, Southern Africa: Society and Culture) to be offered by the Department of African American and African Studies during Spring Quarter 2012. In this class, students will be introduced to the predominant cultural, social, and historical themes of the region. In June 2012, students will travel to South Africa to visit and study sites of cultural and historical importance. The sites are selected for their role in the history and politics of their time, and reflect the general social context of South African life. Lectures and demonstrations will be presented throughout the study abroad program. Note: AFAM&AST 485.01 may apply toward the GEC requirement.Locations
Selected sites will include South Africa (Cape Town, Durban and the Natal region, and Johannesburg). Historically, the region provides unparalleled intellectual and personal opportunities for students to deepen their knowledge of African societies and cultures. The region offers unique examples of human migration patterns and the European colonization of Africa. South Africa and its innovative attempts to resolve and address conflicts among the various races, linguistic groups and social classes have commanded the world?s attention over the past decade.Courses and Credits
