Gomez leads by 1 in Canada

Jaime Gomez fired an 8-under 63 on Thursday to grab a 1-shot lead with the opening round of The Great Waterway Classic suspended due to darkness.

Gomez has won twice on the Canadian Tour, but his last crown was back in 2005.

David Dragoo is alone in second place on the Smuggler's Glen Golf Course at minus-7.

Tyler Harris, Mark Hoffman and Carlos Sainz, Jr. share third at 6-under 65.

Gomez started on the back nine and was on fire from the start. He birdied each of the first four holes, then moved to 5-under with a birdie on the 15th. He parred the final three holes of his opening nine.

On the front side, Gomez traded a birdie for a bogey from the first. Birdies at four and seven moved him to minus-7. Gomez birdied the ninth, his last, to lead by one.

"I was just trying to be patient out there and give myself some looks, and things worked out nice today," said Gomez, who made the cut in his first five tour starts this year.

NOTES: There was a 45-minute delay in the morning and the round was eventually halted by darkness ... The first round will resume Friday at 7:30 a.m. ET.
